What EN 469 actually tests — and what it does not

EN 469 is often quoted as a single pass mark, but the standard is a set of performance requirements that apply to different parts of a turnout garment. Two garments can both be certified and still behave very differently in service, because the test levels chosen for heat transfer and water penetration may differ.

The first distinction to make is between flame spread and heat transfer. Flame spread tests look at whether the material continues to burn after ignition. Heat transfer tests measure how long the assembly protects the wearer from radiant and contact heat. A garment can resist ignition and still transfer heat quickly if the thermal liner is too light for the exposure.

The second distinction is between the garment and the ensemble. EN 469 covers the jacket and trousers as worn. Hoods, gloves and helmets are covered by separate standards. When a procurement team approves a coat, it should also confirm that the hood and gloves in the same order are certified for the intended exposure.

Finally, ask for the test report rather than the certificate alone. The report shows the test levels, the laboratory and the date. Certificates summarise conformity; reports show what was actually measured. Both should be available before a sample run is approved.

Our product pages carry the certificate documents we can share, and the specification sheet lists the construction behind each result. Where a document is still being renewed, the page says so instead of showing a placeholder number.

Certificate records for the standards discussed are listed in the certification library. Where a document is being renewed, the record says so instead of showing a placeholder number.
